Why opening range matters

The first minutes after the open carry the most volume and the overnight orders. The opening range shows where buyers and sellers first agreed, and a break out of it often sets the direction for the morning.

How traders use it

  • Opening range breakout (ORB): a close above the range high is read as a long signal, below the low as a short signal.
  • Many traders wait for RVOL above normal and a candle close outside the range, not just a poke.
  • A break that falls back inside the range is a failed breakout; the other side becomes the target.

What happened over the last 6 sessions

  • EQR closed the day above its 30-minute opening range on 0 of 6 days and below it on 1.
  • On Aug 17 the first close outside the 30-minute range came at 10:00 AM ET, below the range.
  • Gap: EQR opened Aug 17 at $65.96, a gap down of 0.0% from $65.97; the gap was filled.
  • Round numbers nearby: $60.00, $65.00, $70.00.

Combined conditions

  • VWAP ($64.21) was below the 30-minute range.

How to trade around EQR's opening range levels

1. 30-minute breakoutA 5-minute close above $66.10 after 10:00 AM with RVOL above normal is the breakout signal; back under $66.10 cancels it.
2. 30-minute breakdownA close under $65.54 with volume is the breakdown signal; a fast reclaim is a false breakdown.
