Trading the zone: where is price right now?

Top 25% of the zone

Two setups: reversal or breakout. If the move into the zone is stretched (in ATR), traders watch for the reversal; look for a shooting star or bearish engulfing candle. For a breakout, check RVOL.

Middle of the zone

Direction is undecided. Wait for price to reach one edge, then decide between reversal and breakout, using ATR to measure the room.

Bottom 25% of the zone

A reversal up or a break below. For the reversal look for a hammer or bullish engulfing candle; for the break below, look for high RVOL.

Trading the levels: common questions

What are support and resistance levels?

Prices where buying (support) or selling (resistance) showed up before. Traders expect price to react there again.

On SEPT: the key support and resistance for every stock draw on your chart, live. Try it free →
What is the premarket high and low?

The highest and lowest prices between 4:00 and 9:30 AM ET, before the regular session opens.

On SEPT: the premarket high and low draw automatically and update live from 4:00 AM. Try it free →
How do you trade the premarket high and low?

Traders watch for a break above the high or below the low after 9:30 AM, or a rejection back into the range.

On SEPT: get a real-time alert when price breaks the premarket high or low, or only when your confirmation (RVOL, candle close) and entry conditions are met too. Try it free →
What is the RTH high and low?

The high and low of regular trading hours, 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM ET.

On SEPT: RTH levels update live during the session and carry over to the next day. Try it free →
What is VWAP and how do traders use it?

The volume-weighted average price. Price above VWAP points to buyers in control; a reclaim of VWAP is a common entry signal.

On SEPT: VWAP and its bands are built into the SEPT chart; alert on a VWAP reclaim or loss. Try it free →
How are pivot points calculated?

From yesterday’s high, low and close: pivot = (H + L + C) / 3, with R1–R3 above and S1–S3 below.

On SEPT: pivots are calculated for you before the open, for every stock. Try it free →
What is an opening range breakout?

A move out of the high or low of the first 5, 15 or 30 minutes of trading.

On SEPT: 5, 15 and 30-minute opening ranges draw automatically; screen for stocks breaking out right now. Try it free →
What is the initial balance?

The high and low of the first hour of regular trading, 9:30 to 10:30 AM ET.

On SEPT: the initial balance draws on your chart at 10:30 AM automatically. Try it free →
What is a supply and demand zone?

A price area where large orders came in. Traders watch the top and bottom edges for reversals and breakouts.

On SEPT: zones are found for you on the daily and 1-hour charts. Try it free →
What is the difference between supply and demand zones and support and resistance?

Support and resistance are price lines; zones are price areas built from where big orders came in. Zones show where price may react, not an exact price.

On SEPT: the zones are found for you, with their quality, tests and where price sits inside them. Try it free →
Why do supply and demand zones fail?

Each test uses up orders in the zone. After several tests, or with strong news or a trend against it, a zone is more likely to break.

On SEPT: see how many times a zone was tested, and ask GOAX whether it still looks strong. Try it free →
What does "trading the zone" mean?

Planning trades by where price sits inside a zone: top, middle or bottom, and using ATR to measure the room left.

On SEPT: see whether price is at the top, middle or bottom of its zone, live. Try it free →
When should I look for a reversal and when for a breakout?

Near a zone edge after a stretched move, traders watch for reversal candles. With strong RVOL and no stretch, a breakout is more likely to be watched.

On SEPT: ask GOAX to check the move in ATR, RVOL and the candle shape for you, then test the setup’s odds in the Setup Builder. Try it free →
What is ATR and why use it with levels?

Average True Range, a stock’s normal daily move. It shows whether a level is near or far and whether a move is stretched.

On SEPT: ATR is shown in the chart header, and distances to levels are measured in ATR for you. Try it free →
What is RVOL?

Relative volume: today’s volume compared with the stock’s normal volume. High RVOL supports a breakout.

On SEPT: screen for stocks with high RVOL at a level, right now. Try it free →
Which candles signal a reversal at a level?

Common ones: hammer, shooting star, and bullish or bearish engulfing candles.

On SEPT: GOAX can spot reversal candles at your levels and alert you. Try it free →
What is a mother bar?

A large bar whose range contains the bars after it. A break out of the mother bar is a common setup.

On SEPT: mother bars are marked on your chart as they form. Try it free →
How do you trade a mother bar breakout?

Traders wait for the first candle to close above or below the mother bar, not just poke through it.

On SEPT: alert on the first close above or below the mother bar instead of watching every candle. Try it free →
What is a false breakout of a mother bar?

Price breaks out, then closes back inside the mother bar. Many traders then watch the other side of the bar.

On SEPT: test how often false breakouts happen on your stocks with the Setup Builder. Try it free →
What is a gap fill?

When price moves back to yesterday’s close after opening with a gap up or down.

On SEPT: see the gap and the fill level drawn on the chart, and get alerted when it fills. Try it free →
Why do round numbers matter in trading?

Many orders sit at round prices like $100 or $200, so price often reacts there.

On SEPT: combine round numbers with other levels in your setups to find the strongest areas. Try it free →
What are the odds a level holds or breaks?

There is no single number: odds change with the stock, the time of day, the trend, RVOL and how many times the level was tested.

On SEPT: test the odds of any level setup on real data, and find which signal, confirmation and entry conditions give the best win rate and R:R. Try it free →
How can I practice trading the levels without risking money?

Paper trade: place practice trades with fake money on real prices.

On SEPT: paper trade on the live chart, recap each trade with GOAX, and replay up to 20 years of real market data. Try it free →
Are these levels updated in real time?

No. The levels on these pages are delayed.

On SEPT: they update in real time on your chart. Try it free →
Where can I see a stock’s levels live on a chart?

In the SEPT live chart.

On SEPT: open the live chart and switch any level on or off in one click. Try it free →
Can I get an alert when price reaches a level?

Yes, on the SEPT platform.

On SEPT: yes, in real time. Go further: build an alert from your signal, confirmation and entry conditions, so you only get alerted when your full setup is ready. GOAX can also watch your open positions and alert you near your stop or target. Try it free →
